Fountains allow urbanized people, far from the natural water sources, to indulge in the pleasure of free-flowing water.

They have new traits, strange and beautiful beings, but they can also be entertaining. For example, they readily attract attention and, more likely, critical commentary. The more walls and wells you discover, the more exciting and satisfying they become.

The Washington Post goes so far as to say that public wells are in crisis, disappearing from stadiums, parks, and even schools.

I set out to better understand the current state of drinking fountains and to answer the issue of whether it is safe to drink from them. The theme may be decorative water fountains, but the dysfunctional use of water is so widespread that it is often overlooked if noticed at all. Water is beautiful and has an emotional and aesthetic attraction that I consider irrelevant; it flows out of the tap; it does not have to flow out of the valve.

The splashing and flowing of fountains reveal the dubious use of water, but the water is used not to be used for drinking or other purposes such as toilets. As with sprays, low-flow toilets are not usually the subject of public attention or concern.
